I am a fully qualified counsellor and registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I provide both short-term and long-term face-to-face counselling to individuals (18+) from my private practice in Hursley Park situated between Romsey and Winchester, with convenient access from the M3.
I believe that feeling heard and understood can create the environment for us to make sense of ourselves and our experiences.
My approach is humanistic and relational. At the heart of this is an interest in you as an individual, your experiences, your relationships and what matters to you. I aim to offer a calm, warm and non-judgemental space where we can explore these things together, at a pace that feels right for you.
Mental health is about more than managing difficulties. It is also about recognising our strengths, developing a greater sense of wellbeing and finding fulfilment in our lives.
My evidence-based approach draws on research into what works in counselling, while remaining attentive to your particular needs and circumstances. I aim to support you in exploring your experiences, becoming more aware of patterns in how you think, feel and relate, and working towards changes you would like to see in your life.
Through my counselling work, I have supported adults in both NHS primary care and community outreach settings. This has included working with anxiety, depression, bereavement, grief and loss, relationship and communication difficulties, stress, burnout, low self-esteem, and periods of significant change.
I trained in Humanistic Counselling with Transactional Analysis, an integrative approach to psychotherapy grounded in humanistic philosophy. It explores how we communicate and relate to others, and how earlier experiences can shape patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving that continue to influence our lives today. Becoming aware of these patterns can create opportunities for change and growth.
My approach is also informed by an understanding of trauma, and I draw on Gestalt techniques where these may be helpful, particularly in bringing attention to what is happening in the present moment and exploring feelings and experiences.
I have a longstanding interest in the positive effects of nature on emotional wellbeing, including the psychological benefits of birdsong, which I have explored through my own research. I am particularly interested in how spending time outdoors and noticing the patterns, colours and sounds of nature can promote positive emotions, reduce stress and offer a welcome pause from the demands of everyday life.
In nature, we can find space to recover from stress and restore our attention.
Inspired by the research of Roger S. Ulrich and the Kaplans, Environmental Psychologists
I also have a background in research and teaching in medical schools, which has given me insight into the pressures of academic and professional life. This includes the demands experienced by undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as academic professionals and those working in demanding professional environments, where managing uncertainty and balancing work with other aspects of life can present particular challenges.
I continue to develop my practice through further professional training, with a particular focus on the role of the nervous system in emotional regulation and responses to stress. I am also developing my knowledge and therapeutic skills to support clients experiencing obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
I place considerable value on regular clinical supervision, which supports me in reflecting critically on my work, exploring different therapeutic perspectives and continuing to develop as a counsellor.
As a registered member of the BACP, I work in accordance with its Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions. I am also a graduate member of the British Psychological Society (BPS). I hold professional indemnity insurance and a DBS certificate, and am registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) for data protection purposes.
